What is ENLACE?
ENgaging LAtino Communities for Education is a nationwide project initiated by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to increase higher education participation and success for Latino students.
The ENLACE partnerships include Hispanic-serving institutions of higher education, community members, families and other organizations in nine states. By drawing on the strengths of the community, ENLACE activities focus on the multiple points of the students' educational career, including elementary, middle school, high school and post-secondary. In this way, ENLACE is not only a model of student success in the K-12 system, it also supports student access and success in higher education.
Although ENLACE intentionally avoids the "one-size fits all" model, its programmatic components can generally fit into three themes that build upon each other.
- Creating a Seamless Pathway to College-- This involves working to align curricula and standards to allow a direct pathway along a P-20 model. This alignment ensures that students move from one level of school to the next ultimately prepared to succeed in college.
- Strengthening Supports for Students-- This involves linking schools, parents and community members through mentoring, tutoring and leadership development to support student achievement in a rigorous college preparatory curriculum.
- Changing Educational Institutions-- This involves engaging educational institutions at all levels of the P-20 continuum to be more responsive to the needs of underserved students. It also, encourages innovative partnerships that could leverage public and private resources for creative ways to finance college for low-income students.
