Overview
A recent ruling on the Pledge of Allegiance by the United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has ignited controversy across the nation.
The Court found that the words "under God" in the Pledge make it unconstitutional for recitation in public schools. The U.S. Congress added the "under God" reference to the Pledge in 1954. Nearly a half-century later, the nation has responded to the court's decision amid a flurry of debate. Lawmakers of all political persuasions have been drawn together on the issue. Although the ruling only extends to the states in the federal court's jurisdiction (Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Washington), popular news and opinion remain divided on the issue.
