State Legislative Investments in School-Aged Children and Youth (2001) The Finance Project “In recent years, state legislatures across the country have demonstrated growing interest in and attention to out-of-school time and community school initiatives. Forty-six out of 50 states codified legislation explicitly referring to supports and services for school-age children and youth. Collectively, state legislatures created 215 statutes that provide for out-of-school time and community school initiatives. In the 1998-1999 legislative session, lawmakers passed 33 bills specifying support for school-age children and youth. In the 1999-2000 session, that number increased to 41.”
