FEMA Provides Rent and Mortgage Assistance

October 2001

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is using its Mortgage and Rental Assistance program to provide financial assistance to terrorist attack victims who could lose their homes through eviction or foreclosure as a direct result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC).

Residents can apply for assistance following written notice of the intent to evict or foreclose; homeowners and renter may be eligible for up to 18 months of assistance from the date of the disaster declaration. Applicants must document economic hardship resulting from the WTC attack. Victims do not have to live in New York; they are eligible if their employment was directly affected by damages in the WTC impact zone.

To apply, call the FEMA registration line at 1-800/462-9029, Mon.-Sat. from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. or visit this web site for more information: http://www.fema.gov/diz01/d1391n36.htm.
