High Tech Assistance Programs

According to the State Science & Technology Institute (SSTI), a non-profit organization that works to improve government-industry technology efforts, most technology-based economic development programs fall into five categories:

  • Industrial problem-solving, including technical assistance and extension services for existing firms;
  • Technology development, including university-industry centers that work to commercialize technology research through new or existing firms;
  • Start-up business development, which involves business support centers for new technology-focused firms;
  • Financial assistance in the form of debt financing, equity financing (venture capital) and tax incentives; and
  • Networking support, such as funding for new manufacturing associations.
