School Readiness: Considering Social and Emotional Development in an Era Focused on Accountability

As legislators address issues of early childhood development and make policy connections with No Child Left Behind, many states have chosen to focus on school readiness: a child’s readiness for kindergarten as well as the school’s readiness for the child. Due to tight budget times, proven outcomes have become critical for policymakers to make good state budget decisions.  In an era of accountability and focus on cognitive outcomes, what are states doing to ensure the social and emotional well-being of young children so that they start school ready to learn?  This audioconference will examine the importance of social and emotional development in children in order to begin school ready to learn.  Participants will also learn about different state and national initiatives that address this issue.
