AdoptionSince passage of the federal Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 (ASFA), states have made great strides in increasing the number of children adopted from foster care. Despite ASFA, however, states are struggling to meet national standards for timeliness of adoption. Another important challenge is meeting the increased need for post-adoption services, such as mental health, respite care, and information and referral services.
