Prevention of Child Maltreatment

Child abuse prevention services are generally organized and delivered at the community level and are funded by a diverse array of federal, state and private sources. The predominant and most thoroughly researched child abuse prevention strategy is early childhood home visitation. This approach has been shown to be effective in preventing child abuse in some families under some circumstances. State legislatures are experimenting with other approaches, including safe haven laws intended to prevent unsafe abandonment of newborns. Another emerging strategy is integrating family support and child abuse prevention into the work of the early childhood education community.

Strategies to Prevent the Abuse of Infants and Toddlers. To assist state lawmakers in better understanding child abuse prevention issues, NCSL recently hosted a 90-minute web-assisted audioconference entitled, "Strategies to Prevent the Abuse of Infants and Toddlers." The audiconference examined what the research shows about child abuse prevention programs and their effectiveness and introduced initiatives at the Centers for Disease Control's Division of Violence Prevention to develop and test child abuse prevention strategies. The audioconference also presented information on a new initiative to explore the capacity of early care and education settings (such as childcare and early childhood programs) to reach out to parents with strategies to prevent child abuse. Additionally, the audioconference included discussion of a recent review of home visitation programs conducted by the Task Force for Community Preventive Services. This audioconference was funded with a grant from the Centers for Disease Control National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.

January 7th web-assisted audioconference "Strategies to Prevent the Abuse of Infants and Toddlers" archived replay. This lnk requires audio flash in order to hear the presentation via your computer. If your computer does not support flash, presenter slides are available. Audioconference agenda.
