The issue: Children under three experience the highest rates of child abuse and neglect. Homicide is now the leading cause of injury deaths among infants. The youngest infants are at the greatest risk of entering foster care for reasons of maltreatment. Recent data also confirm that children under four are twice as likely to be placed in foster care as are older children. What can be done? This audioconference will examine what we currently know about child abuse prevention programs and their effectiveness, including a recent review of home visitation programs conducted by the Task Force for Community Preventive Services. Participants will learn about initiatives at the Centers for Disease Control's Division of Violence Prevention to develop and test child abuse prevention strategies. Audience members will also hear about a new initiative to explore the capacity of early care and education settings (such as childcare and early childhood programs) to reach out to parents with strategies to prevent child abuse. Presenters: Dr. Deborah Daro, Chapin Hall Center for Children Dr. Rodney Hammond, Director of the Division of Violence Prevention of the Centers for Disease Control's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control Dr. John Lutzker, Chief of the Prevention Development and Evaluation Branch of the Centers for Disease Control's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. Creator of Project SafeCare. Judy Langford, Senior Fellow, Center for the Study of Social Policy QUESTIONS: CONTACT NINA WILLIAMS-MBENGUE AT 303-856-1507 OR nina.mbengue@ncsl.org.
