Jack ShonkoffBio of Jack P. Shonkoff, M.D.


Jack P. Shonkoff, M.D., is professor of Child Health and Development and director of the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University and founding chair of the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child. Dr Shonkoff has received multiple professional honors, including elected membership to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, elected membership to the American Pediatric Society, designated National Associate of the National Academies, the C. Anderson Aldrich Award in Child Development from the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Public Policy for Children from the Society for Research in Child Development.

One of his best known works came under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences, where Dr. Shonkoff chaired the Committee on Integrating the Science of Early Childhood Development for the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council, which produced the landmark report entitled From Neurons to Neighborhoods: The Science of Early Childhood Development

The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University was established in July 2006 to advance scientific knowledge of early childhood development.  The center will draw ultimately on all Harvard-wide schools and affiliated hospitals to generate a rich portfolio of scholarship, education, and public engagement.The Center will utilize the contributions of distinguished leaders in neuroscience, molecular biology, genetics, psychology, sociology, economics, medicine, education, public health, public policy, law, and business.
