SCHOOL VIOLENCE: 10 Things Legislators Need to Know

February 2000

In the wake of increased concern around school violence, state legislators will be faced with difficult decisions in the 2000 sessions regarding statewide policies. NCSL recently published "School Violence: Ten Things Legislators Need to Know" in order to assist lawmakers in this difficult process. The publication provides a broad overview of the most prominent issues that legislators face in the area of school violence, as well as a framework within which to address them.

The "Ten Things Legislators Need to Know" includes:

  • Schools are safe places.
  • School violence is not just a school problem.
  • States and schools are implementing a variety of programs to deal with school violence; some have proven effective, some look promising, and others are ineffective.
  • Legislators play a critical role in providing a statewide framework for addressing school and youth violence.
  • We are still learning about "what works;" demand assessment and hold programs accountable.
