NCSL BANKING PARTNERS PROJECT

Steering Committee Meeting Summary

Friday, April 15, 2005, 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

NCSL’s Banking Partners Project Steering Committee met on Friday, April 15th in Washington, D.C.  Committee members present included:  Representative Donna Stone, Delaware, Chair of the Steering Committee; Senator Delores G. Kelley, Maryland; Representative Mike Vehle, South Dakota; Ryan Wilson, Maryland Department of Legislative Services; Beth Percynski, Mortgage Bankers Association; Greg Williams and Phil Hitz, American Financial Services Association; Sharon Hermanson and Adam Goldberg, AARP; Spencer Hathaway, AARP Consultant; Phil Drager, CUNA; Caroline Carlson, Foundation for State Legislatures; Heather Morton, NCSL.

Members discussed and made the following recommendations regarding the project deliverables as follows:

Project Sessions

  • Money+Knowledge=Financial Literacy, held on April 15, 2005, at the NCSL Spring Forum in Washington, D.C..
  • Session to be held in conjunction with the NCSL Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington, August 16-20, 2005.  The partners will schedule a conference call to plan the session.

Written Products

  • NCSL staff prepared and distributed the final version of the report "Financial Literacy:  A Primer for Policymakers" for review.

Second Phase of FSL Banking Partners Project

  • Members discussed possible project topics, including deferred compensation plans, Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA), state licensing of mortgage officers, reverse mortgages, credit cards.
  • Caroline Carlson will follow up with the partners regarding fundraising for the second phase.

Next Meeting of the FSL Banking Steering Committee:

  • NCSL Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington, August 16-20, 2005
