Though much has been discussed about Avian Flu and its effects on the human population, less has been discussed on the devastating impacts the disease could have the poultry industry and agriculture in general. This audioconference invites speakers from USDA to talk about federal responses to the flu, approaches the state of New York has taken to protect its producers from an avian flu outbreak, efforts underway by the private sector to protect flocks, and efforts state legislators can take to reduce the impact.
Larry Granger, DVM, Associate Deputy Administrator, US Department of Agriculture, Washington, D.C. [Slide]
Bio: Dr. Granger is the Associate Deputy Administrator for Emergency Management in USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Veterinary Service. He is filling in for Dr. Clifford, who was unable to participate in today's conference. Dr. Granger oversees long-standing VS efforts to comprehensively plan and prepare for potentially devastating foreign animal diseases live highly pathogenic avian influenza.
Dr. John Huntley, DVM, MPH, State Veterinarian, New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, Albany, NY [Slide]
Bio: Dr. Huntley is a 1980 graduate of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. He obtained his Masters in Public Health degree in 1999 at the School of Public Health, State University of New York at Albany. Since 1990, Dr. Huntley has served as the Director of the Division of Animal Industry, New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. His responsibilities include the development of infectious disease control programs for livestock populations and captive wildlife.
Richard Lobb, National Chicken Council, Washington, D.C. [Slide]
Bio: Mr. Lobb is the director of Communications for the National Chicken Council, the national, non-profit trade association representing the U.S. chicken industry. NCC is a full-service trade association that promotes and protects the interests of the chicken industry and is the industry’s voice before Congress and federal agencies.
