  • An overview of radon and its potential risk to human health - Dr. Bill Field, University of Iowa

In addition, information was presented on:

  • state radon programs and innovative approaches to responding to radon hazards;
  • upcoming events promoting National Radon Action Month in January 2008; and
  • how legislators can get involved by recording public service announcements on radon.

Bill Long is the Director of the Center for Radon and Air Toxics in EPA’s Indoor Environments Program.  He has over 10 years of experience directing national environmental programs to improve air quality at the US EPA.  Bill specializes in community-based leadership development and the design of leadership campaigns that enable organizations to achieve results.

Tobie Bernstein is a Senior Attorney at the Environmental Law Institute, a non-profit research and education center in Washington, D.C.  Tobie directs ELI’s work on environmental and health issues relating to the built environment, providing law and policy research, analysis and education to help strengthen state and local programs in this area.  ELI works to improve indoor air quality in schools, multi-family housing, and other types of buildings.  ELI also analyzes state and local polices that advance the integration of health and environmental goals in building design and construction. Prior to joining ELI, Tobie worked as an attorney for the Maryland Legal Aid Bureau, Inc., where she represented clients in housing, consumer, health and family law matters.  Tobie received her B.A. degree from Washington University in St. Louis, and her law degree from Harvard Law School.

R. William Field, Ph.D., M.S. is a professor in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health with a joint appointment in the Department of Epidemiology in the College of Public Health at the University of Iowa. He is also the director of the Occupational Epidemiology Training Program at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) - funded Heartland Center for Occupational Health and Safety and co-director of the Environmental Lung Disease Research Cluster of the National Institute of Environmental Health Science (NIEHS) - funded Environmental Health Sciences Research Center, both at the University of Iowa. He currently chairs a World Health Organization (WHO) working group tasked with recommending radon measurement strategies for member countries and serves on several other radon-related WHO working groups. Dr. Field was the lead author for the comprehensive Iowa Radon Lung Cancer Study.  He has also been active in numerous national and international collaborative radon projects for many years including the current global pooling of case-control residential radon studies.  Dr. Field’s electronic CV is available here: http://myprofile.cos.com/Fieldrw
