Legislators Serve Double Duty at Home and Overseas

Lawmakers and legislative staff across the country are honored for their roles as civic soldiers.

LOUISVILLE, KY. – They participate in our democracy at home and represent our country overseas. Sixteen members of the legislative community received a national award for honoring their state and our country by serving in a state legislature while being called away from their state or deployed overseas.

The 15 legislators and one legislative staff member from 11 states and one territory were awarded the National Medal of Civic Honor at the National Conference of State Legislatures’ 2010 Legislative Summit today in Louisville, Ky. This ceremony took place at the opening general session on Monday, June 26, in the Cascade Ballroom at the Kentucky International Convention Center. Five legislators, including a representative from Kentucky, were present to receive the award.

“This award allows NCSL and its Trust for Representative Democracy to honor those who put their state and country before themselves,” said William T. Pound, executive director of NCSL. “These legislators and legislative staff not only have devoted their lives to serving their state in the legislature, but also our nation in Iraq, Afghanistan and related areas.

This is the fourth time NCSL has bestowed such honors. Forty-six legislators and staff have previously received The National Medal of Civic Honor. It has been given in 2003, 2005 and 2007.
