Seminar Highlights

The year's seminar features an extensive overview of Louisiana's information technology applications for legislative operations, research and reference services. Also, there will be technology discussions that address electronic records retention, state documents acquisitions, networking with state agencies, and coordinating legislative research. Another session offers a discussion of library cataloging and other automation systems.

We will also have the opportunity to learn about Louisiana's varied and colorful political history. Since 1541, the state has been governed under 10 different flags. With acquisition of Louisiana territory in 1803, President Thomas Jefferson nearly doubled the size of the U.S. Thirteen states were eventually carved out of the Louisiana Purchase. Baton Rouge became Louisiana's capital in 1849, and a new capitol building was completed in 1932. Built in Art Deco style with interiors of marble and bronze, it is the tallest state capitol in the U.S. The Old State Capitol with Gothic architecture is nearly 150 years old and "has withstood war, fire, scandal, bitter debate, abandonment, and an occasional fistfight." In 1935, Senator Huey Long was assassinated in the state capitol.

During the seminar, LRL is tentatively scheduled to dine at the Louisiana Governor's Mansion, built in 1963 in modified Greek Revival style as a replica of one of the state's plantation mansions.

All programs for the seminar will be held at the State Capitol in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, unless otherwise specified in the preliminary agenda. Transportation to and from the capitol will be provided.
