Women in State Legislatures: 2011 Legislative Session

NOTE: This information is subject to change due to resignations, appointments and special elections.
Approximately 1,744 women serve in the 50 state legislatures at this point in the 2011 legislative session. Women are 23.6 percent of all state legislators nationwide. This is a slight decrease from the 2010 session's ratio of 24.5 percent female legislators.

2011 State Legislative Election Update:
Four states (Louisiana, New Jersey, Mississippi and Virginia) held regular state legislative elections in 2011. Based upon preliminary returns, there will be 1,737 women serving in state legislatures around the country in 2012. This is a decline from the 1,744 women who served as of November 2011.
