State Capitols: Original Construction Dates

The capitols are the homes of most state legislatures. These incredible buildings were constructed as early as 1772 and as recently as 1972. Each building is as unique as the state in which it resides.   

 

Current Capitol (or building where the legislature meets)  - Original Construction Dates

Alabama

Capitol -1851  (Note: Legislature was temporarily relocated to the State House in 1985 while capitol was restored. Legislature has not moved back as of 2011.)  The State House was constructed in 1963.

Arizona

Senate and House are located in separate buildings (including chambers) which were constructed in 1960. (State Capitol is a museum 1899-1900)

1785-1798 original building (first occupied by legislature in 1788 and by courts and governor in 1789 during ongoing construction). New House and Senate wings added 1904-1906 (still in use). Underground extension with multi-purpose meeting rooms and new visitor amenities added 2005-2007.
