Overview

Delegate Kathy Afzali (R) of Maryland spoke about her support for strengthening voter ID requirements at an NCSL panel at the 2011 Spring Forum in Washington, D.C.  Afzali is a freshman representative with an interest in protecting the voting process. Her interest was stirred in 2000, when a voter divulged to her that she had voted for then-candidate Bush—twice. Now, she says “people ask me incessantly why the people in Maryland don’t need to show an ID to vote.”

Delegate Afzali is a former Frederick News Post columnist and conservative voice on cable’s "Pressing Issues," soccer mom and businesswoman with 30 years experience in the private sector and the non-profit sector. She is the founder of Access KDM Consulting, which mostly serves the Pharmaceutical and Biotech Industries.

This spring, she sponsored voter ID legislation, which failed. In future years she will be interested in incorporating other election-fraud possibilities, including voter registration improvements, in her legislative initiatives.
