Overview
Arizona was the first state to give citizens the opportunity to register to vote via a secure online application. Now eleven states make this option available, with three others awaiting implementation.
Tammy Patrick, who works on elections in Arizona's largest county, shares her state's experiences with online voter registration in this three-minute video interview.
She describes the improvement in accuracy, the reduction in time required to process an application, and the huge cost savings that Arizona has seen. To process a paper application takes 83 cents; to process an online application costs 3 cents.
She reports, "quite frankly, I don't know if we could exist without it." 85 percent of voter registration applications are submitted online now; paper applications continue to be available for anyone who prefers that option.
