Being a legislator is not an easy job. You must cope with an ever-increasing number of complex issues. You face scrutiny from the news media and public. The expanding demands place a higher premium on finding ways to do your job more effectively. As a result, good legislators never stop learning.

NCSL is here to help by offering a variety of ways for you to get information and training, such as:

  • Meetings—for example, the NCSL Legislative Summit, Fall Forum and other specialized meetings

  • Publications—for example, State Legislatures magazine, the LegisBrief series and other topic-specific documents

NCSL also has created an audio series on how to be an effective legislator.  The series covers:

  • Mastering the legislative process

  • Managing the budget

  • Mastering the rules

  • Working with staff and lobbyists

  • Serving your constituents

  • Building consensus

  • Dealing with the media

  • Chairing a committee

In addition, NCSL also will assist legislatures or chambers with individualized programs—for example, new member orientations and committee chair training.

New Member Orientation in State Legislatures
