This one-hour webinar presented the concept of issue-driven writing as a way to connect with legislative audiences. All legislative staff—whether experienced or interns, clerical, legal or IT—will benefit by learning how to use an opening hook to get readers invested in the topic, develop information based on the readers’ questions about the issue, and present that information professionally but “conversationally” in a way that’s most efficient and compelling for readers.

  • Harvey Lillywhite, co-director, Quality Communications Group Inc., a national provider of workplace writing training.

Harvey Lillywhite, Ph.D., is a subject matter expert in workplace writing with a special area of expertise in audit report writing. Lillywhite has more than 30 years’ experience in the classroom and the workplace teaching effective writing skills. In addition to teaching writing at Columbia University, the University of Utah, and Towson University, he has taught for government agencies at the federal, state and local levels and in the private sector. He also serves as co-director of Quality Communications Group Inc., a national provider of workplace writing training. He has developed and taught a wide range of writing courses, including effective workplace writing and critical thinking, technical writing, reviewing others’ writing, preparing congressional testimony, writing plain English regulations, and applied grammar. He is a tenured full professor of English at Towson University, where he has taught since 1984 and served as director of the graduate program in professional writing for several years. Since 1987, he has been on the training faculty at the Government Accountability Office, where he has taught and helped to develop that agency’s extensive writing curriculum.  Along with Kevin Dungey, Ph.D., he has authored two books on workplace writing, "Mastering Workplace Writing Skills" and "Smart Writing at Work." He is currently finishing a book, "Writing Effective Audit Reports," which should be published in 2014.
