State Legislative Page Programs

8/20/2019

Overview

Page programs are often mentioned simultaneously with internship programs, but the two actually differ quite a bit.

While both serve as unique educational opportunities, providing young people with the opportunity to learn about—and even participate in—the legislative process of their state, the age of participants differs, as does their length of service, responsibilities, and compensation. There are exceptions, but most page programs are geared toward middle school and high school students; interns are typically college-aged and above.

Pages serve a shorter term than interns, anywhere from one day to a couple of weeks, while many interns are employed for the duration of the legislative session. There are differences in compensation as well; pages do not earn academic credit, though they may earn community service credit and sometimes a small salary. Interns often receive both academic credit and a salary or stipend.

Both types of programs may also include field trips and educational opportunities related to state government.

Application Procedures

Typically candidates for a page program must fill out a short application signed by the candidate's parent, and often the school principal and state senator or representative; some programs also have a round of interviews. Contact the programs below for requirements specific to each state.
