2014 LSS Professional Development Seminar Agenda

2014 Leadership Staff Section (LSS) | Professional Development Seminar Agenda

9/4/2014

Join your leadership staff colleagues from across the nation to connect, contribute and collaborate on successful strategies to help you in your legislative staff career. The Leadership Staff Section (LSS) Professional Development Seminar is designed by legislative staff, for legislative staff, and it happens only once a year—don't miss it!

LSS provides a forum for state legislative employees who work for legislative leaders or party caucuses. The LSS seminar is designed to help attendees share solutions, increase the effectiveness of legislative staff and forge important connections with peers from around the country. The meeting features a blend of classroom experiences, facilitated conversations and experiential tours. There will also be plenty of informal networking time to meet with counterparts from other states.

The meeting will be held jointly with the professional development seminar for the Legislative Information and Communications Staff Section (LINCS). There will be sessions of mutual interest to the two groups as well as a track devoted to exploring topics that are designed specifically for leadership staff. You’ll be able to attend a wide variety of workshops that focus on skills-based training and legislative institutional issues.

Leadership Lessons from Disasters
Chairman Room, Westin New Orleans Canal Place

Louisiana has had its fair share of disasters in recent years. Are there any lessons for staff that can be learned from disasters? Using the Insurance Department as an example, how did the department personnel coordinate, communicate and work with the legislative branch, other stakeholders and the public in the midst of and after the various disasters Louisiana has had to face? How did the department and legislative leaders work together in the stressful, out-of-the-ordinary situation of a disaster?

Leadership staff have busy schedules and are pulled in multiple directions, especially during session. But, then an “out-of-the ordinary” event occurs, like a special investigation in the midst of session, adds to the staffer’s already hectic schedule. How do you do your job under such stressful circumstances?
