44th Professional Development Seminar - Milwaukee, Wisconsin - September 8-12, 2010

This year the American Society of Legislative Clerks and Secretaries (ASLCS) will hold its Annual Professional Development Seminar in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The ASLCS seminar is the premier training opportunity that brings together participants from across the country and internationally to learn important skills and procedures, build relationships, and bring home new tools and ideas aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of America’s state legislatures.

Legislative clerks, secretaries and their staffs work in a unique environment for which little formal training is available.  The American Society of Legislative Clerks and Secretaries (ASLCS) responds to these training needs by offering a seminar emphasizing the development of professional skills.  The purposes of the ASLCS Professional Development Seminar are to improve the administrative and parliamentary effectiveness of state legislatures, to develop procedures to enhance lawmaking, and to provide a forum where legislative staff can meet and learn from their counterparts in other states.

Milwaukee Information
With a population of just under 2,000,000, the Milwaukee metropolitan area is the largest metropolitan area in Wisconsin. The city is located on the western bank of Lake Michigan, about 72 miles west of the Wisconsin state capital, Madison, and about 90 miles north of Chicago. The name Milwaukee is derived from the Indian word Millioke, which means "the good land," "gathering place by the water" or "beautiful or pleasant lands." The Milwaukee area was originally inhabited by several Native American tribes, whose influence on the local culture and economy continues to this day.
