Overview
Legislative Education Staff Network
Who We Are
The Legislative Education Staff Network (LESN) is a coordinated network of professional and knowledgeable legislative staff from across the country who, as a major part of their responsibilities, work on education policy, including finance and budget policy.
LESN was established in 1986, by a group of legislative education staff who met, with support from the Danforth Foundation, to discuss the needs of legislative education staff in improving their ability to perform their jobs. The network is a joint and collaborative partnership between the Education Commission of the States (ECS) and the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). LESN is governed by a steering committee consisting of ECS and NCSL appointees.
Why We Exist
The purpose of LESN is to strengthen the capabilities of legislative education staff to support legislative institutions and individual legislators in developing state education laws and policies, both fiscal and programmatic, that support student success.
What We Do
• Network with other legislative staff and with other local, state, and federal education professionals;
• Obtain professional development and training;
• Access information and research on targeted education policy issues;
• Collaborate with education policy and finance experts and researchers;
• Provide technical assistance to other legislative staff on education initiatives; and
• Partner with other education stakeholders to promote high quality education.
