2010 Census
The 2010 Census reports that there are 5.2 million American Indians and Alaska Natives, including those of more than one race. The data was released in November 2010 as communities across the country celebrated National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. Other statistics from the Census include:

Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas and Washington have the largest populations of American Indian and Alaska Native residents, each with over 100,000.

Twenty-eight percent of American Indians and Alaska Natives age five and over speak a language other than English in their homes.

Almost 30 percent of American Indians and Alaska Natives lack health insurance.

The percentage of 25 and older who have a high school diploma or equivalent is 77 percent. Forty-one percent have a bachelor’s degree.

There were 4,599 American Indian and Alaska Native owned firms who earned $1 million or more in 2007.

The median income of households is $35,062 compared to $50,046 for the nation as a whole. Twenty-eight percent currently live in poverty.

The median age of American Indians or Alaska Natives who are no other race is 29 years.

There are 156,515 American Indian and Alaska Native veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.
