Keeping Bicyclists and Pedestrians Safe

  • Bicycle and pedestrian traffic deaths in 2011 increased for the first time since 2008, although they remain below 2001 rates.

 

Bicyclist and pedestrian deaths are on the increase, and lawmakers are working to keep them
safer on American roads. Motor vehicle deaths in 2011 (32,367) were the lowest since 1949, but the number of traffic deaths increased by 3 percent (4,432) for pedestrians over 2010, and by 8.7 percent (677) for bicyclists. The number of injuries, however, declined by 1.4 percent for pedestrians and 7.7 percent for bicyclists. Bicyclists and pedestrians account for almost 15 percent of total traffic-related fatalities, although they make only 12 percent of trips.
