Statistics
-
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) studies estimate that approximately 18 percent of all fatally injured drivers tested positive for some sort of drugs in 2009. (drugs were found in the driver’s system.)
-
Both the proportion of fatally injured drivers tested for drug involvement-- and the proportion of these drivers testing positive for drugs generally—has increased over a 5-year time period shown. (2004-2009)

In the 2007 National Roadside Survey of Alcohol and Drug Use by Drivers study—the combined results of oral fluid and blood tests showed that 16.3% of nighttime, weekend drivers were drug-positive.
