Transforming Health Care Through Technology Steering Committee members visited the UMass Memorial Medical Center e-ICU  center in Worcester, Massachusetts on May 6, 2011. The e-ICU system in place at the UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester
provides remote monitoring of the most ill hospital patients from a command center staffed around the clock by intensive care specialists. Attendees observed the operation of the Worcester command center and heard from the physicians and administrators
responsible for the successful tele-ICU system.  The UMass tele-ICU system is based on Philips’ Visicu eICU technology.

• A 2011 Journal of the American Medical Association article, "Caring for the Critically Ill Patient Hospital Mortality, Length of Stay, and Preventable Complications Among Critically Ill Patients Before and After Tele-ICU Reengineering of Critical Care Processes" concluded that, "in a single academic medical center study, implementation of a tele-ICU intervention was associated with reduced adjusted odds of mortality and reduced hospital length of stay, as well as with changes in best practice adherence and lower rates of preventable complications."
   
• The New England Health Institute, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit, has been studying tele-ICU technology since 2003 and recently released a report with the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative on the use of tele-ICUs in Massachusetts (Critical Care, Critical Choices: The Case for Tele-ICUs in Intensive Care). The report shows that when implemented effectively, tele-ICUs have the potential to save hundreds of additional lives and save hospitals and insurers millions of dollars.
