Immigration and State Laws: Interviews

With Experts

NCSL Legislative Summit, San Antonio, Texas,

Aug. 8-11, 2011

Overview

As of June 30, 2011, 1,592 bills and resolutions related to immigrants were introduced in all 50 state legislatures, with many states introducing measures similar to Arizona’s worksite and law enforcement laws despite pending court decisions on their constitutionality.  The session on “Testing the Constitution: State Immigration Laws and the Courts” featured Professor Peter Schuck, a constitutional scholar from Yale University, who described immigration federalism, the role of states, and areas of federal preemption.  Texas State Senator Leticia Van de Putte, Arizona State Senator Rich Crandall, and Utah State Senator Curtis Bramble offered their perspectives on immigration within their states.

This session was sponsored by:
Executive Committee Task Force on Immigration and the States
Human Services and Welfare Committee
Law and Criminal Justice Committee
Legal Services Staff Section
