National Civics Report Card
Are U.S. students being taught how to be good citizens? The answer is not well enough, according to an evaluation by
The National Assessment of Educational Progress. It released its 2010 civics report card in May—the third such report in 12 years on the civic knowledge and skills of America’s young people. Only about a quarter of students scored “proficient” or “advanced” at all grade levels.. Read More, Read Report
Not Just a Drop in the Bucket: Drinking Water for Schools
Water is essential for health. Surprisingly, it may not be readily available to school children, even though children’s cognitive performance on tasks important for school work improves after a drink of water. Water may especially improve visual attention and memory tasks, according to recent research. Making water more available to school children and teaching them about its health benefits also lowers the risk for childhood obesity and overweight, according to another study published in Pediatrics in 2009. State lawmakers—along with local school authorities, the federal government, businesses, parents and students—can play a role in developing policies, infrastructure and practices to make fresh drinking water more available to school children.
