Overview
State policymakers are asking important questions about how to ensure young people become successful and productive adults. What supports do youth need? How can we keep youth from dropping out of high school? How do we reduce smoking and alcohol and drug use among teens? What can state policymakers do to prepare young people for college, the workforce and beyond? How do state legislators find out what youth are thinking and engage them in the legislative process? Policymakers are responding to these questions with various policies and programs.
NCSL provides legislators with the latest research around positive youth development, offering them the tools and support to improve outcomes for youth. NCSL covers a broad range of youth issues, including at-risk and disconnected youth, youth in transition, youth violence and civic engagement.
The Denver-based youth project staff focuses on state policy, tracking legislation and providing research and policy analysis, consultation, and technical assistance specifically geared to the legislative audience.
NCSL staff in Washington, D.C. track and analyze federal legislation and policy and represents state legislatures on youth issues before Congress and the Administration.
