Oral Health and the Affordable Care Act: State Roles

Dental disease is preventable, yet dental decay is the most common chronic illness and unmet health treatment need in children in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-quarter of children have tooth decay before entering kindergarten. By age 19, 68 percent of youth have experienced tooth decay in permanent teeth.  In the U.S., nine million children lack health insurance, and more than twice that number lack access to oral health services.  Untreated dental caries can lead to pain, weight loss, missed school days, poor appearance, decreased self-esteem and even death.

The Affordable Care Act includes a number of provisions related to dental health, and many states have initiated efforts to improve children’s oral health. This webinar will feature presentations from national and state experts, and will include an overview on children’s oral health, a breakdown of oral health provisions included in the federal health reform law and the state role in implementation, and information on the successful programs adopted in Iowa.
