Hotspots are geographic concentrations of patients whose health care costs are high.
|
A few pioneering scientists are turning numbers into maps in order to tackle one of the most complicated issues in health care: cost control. These analysts use Medicaid and insurance claims data to produce maps that show geographic concentrations of patients—called “hotspots”—whose health care costs are very high. After identifying them, analysts, health care professionals and government officials work to determine why they exist and how to eliminate or diminish them.
