New challenges and opportunities exist to maintain and improve primary care.

Primary care providers help keep patients healthy; diagnose and treat acute and chronic illnesses; and counsel and educate patients in a variety of settings such as a doctor’s office, community health center, long-term care facility or even patients' homes. The economic slump and passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) offer states both challenges and opportunities to improve primary health care.
