Children's unique needs may be overlooked in disaster planning.

Children make up nearly 25 percent of the population, yet, according to the National Commission on Children and Disasters, their unique needs often are overlooked or misunderstood when planning for and managing a disaster. Each weekday, for example, 67 million children attend schools and the more than 325,000 licensed child care facilities in the United States. According to Save the Children, however, only 12 states require child care facilities and schools to meet four basic criteria for disaster preparedness. Find out more about the criteria.
