Housing is one of the major influences on health and well-being. People spend more than half their lives in their homes, and many chronic illnesses can be traced to a person’s living conditions.
Studies in the previous century highlighted poor housing conditions that adversely affected health, focusing research mainly on the “working poor.” These reports concluded that the nation’s health overall could be improved by building safe, sanitary housing and providing street cleaning, drainage, sewage, ventilation and safe water supplies.
