Commercial buildings compose nearly half of building energy use and roughly 20% of total energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Energy expenditures average more than $2 per square foot in commercial and government buildings, making energy a cost worth managing. States can encourage building owners to improve the efficiency of their buildings by making energy performance visible through the use of benchmarking and disclosure policies. Through enhanced awareness, benchmarking results can drive new investment and create an estimated 5 to 15 green jobs per $1 million invested. This webinar introduced participants to benchmarking and disclosure laws across the country and provided an update on the goals and activities of the State and Local Energy Efficiency Action Network (SEE Action).

The next SEE Action webcast,  “Energy Performance Benchmarking and Disclosure Policies for Public and Commercial Buildings,” on Thursday, July 26, from 2:00-3:30 pm EDT.  This webcast will provide an opportunity for communities to learn successful strategies for adopting and implementing benchmarking and disclosure policies. The session will be moderated by Cliff Majersik of the Institute for Market Transformation, who will introduce the components and benefits of benchmarking and disclosure policies.
