The Fall Forum Task Force on Energy Supply meeting focuses on critical issues that must be considered when developing comprehensive state energy plans, including generation planning, federal mandates, regulations and resources. This meeting focused on issues that play in important role in the planning and decision-making that will be necessary to meet future state energy needs.

Energy Generation Planning
Developing and financing long term energy generation plans can be complex and challenging, given the potential for changes in fuel markets, policies and generation technology. This session explored how states can develop generation plans in the face of changing markets and regulations.

U.S. Department of Energy’s Role in State Energy Policy
DOE is closely involved with states in many areas, including fossil fuels, nuclear energy, efficiency, transmission and renewables. DOE’s work often supports states in their efforts to develop energy resources and infrastructure. During this session, DOE representatives discussed DOE’s work with the states and how states can take advantage of DOE’s expertise and resources.

French Nuclear Policy and U.S. Update
This session explored the role of French nuclear policy in building the nuclear generation fleet. Topics included financing, waste reprocessing, energy costs and other issues. The session also included a summary of recent nuclear energy developments in the U.S. regarding the recent report by the Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future.

State and Federal Roles in Supporting Successful Energy and Environmental Policies and Regulations
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s regulation of air and water emissions has a dramatic effect on the power industry. In developing energy policy, incorporating current and potential future EPA regulatory activity is a critical component to ensuring an efficient use of resources. This session discussed EPA’s regulatory role, current and future regulations that impact the power industry and policies that avoid the costly compliance problems.

State Energy Planning
Ensuring that many disparate pieces of energy legislation support state energy goals can be a challenge. Some states have created comprehensive energy plans to set targets and guidelines for reliability, cost and resources. The plan can guide policymaking and prevent new policies from conflicting with existing plans or state goals. This session reviewed a variety of state plans, why they were created, and what components are critical to a successful plan.
