Overview
As states consider support for public higher education, they are interested in strategies that have a clear “pay-off” in terms of return on investment—by contributing to economic development, strengthening the workforce and creating jobs. This session explores the link between higher education and the economy and discusses ways to strengthen it.
Panelists described the importance of higher education to a state's economy, and the need, therefore, to improve college graduation rates. Polices such as performance-based funding and development education were discussed as ways to improve college completion.
Dr. Poole's presentation highlighted four ways legislators can think about how higher education contributes to economic development: 1) Student learning, 2) Basic and Applied Research, 3) Community Engagement, and 4) World Class Talent.
