  • Twelve states and the District of Columbia have school voucher programs.

 

While state support for private school education has existed in some form for at least 140 years, economist Milton Friedman’s 1955 essay, “The Role of Government in Education,” helped launch modern efforts to use public money to pay private school tuition. He theorized that competition among schools would lead to increased student achievement and decreased education costs. This idea has gained traction in many states over the past two decades.
