Effective principals are essential to improving learning.

Effective principals are essential to improving teaching and learning and turning around low-performing schools. A mounting body of research confirms that teachers and leaders are the two most significant school-based factors in improving student achievement, particularly in our most challenging schools. Landmark research commissioned by The Wallace Foundation found virtually no documented instances of troubled schools being turned around without an effective leader. Effective principals attract and retain talented teachers and ensure that excellent teaching and learning exist school-wide. They create vision, provide professional development for teachers and school staff, organize resources to improve classroom instruction and student learning, and strengthen school culture. Investing in school leadership can be a cost-effective way to improve teaching and learning.
