State Tax Actions Database

In the first quarter of each year NCSL releases its annual "State Tax Actions" report. The latest report shows tax and revenue measures enacted nationwide in 2011 yielded a net decrease of $774.6 million in fiscal year 2012. To illustrate what tax actions states are taking, NCSL put together a database detailing the states’ tax changes. The database includes all actions enacted so far in 2012 as well as actions from 2011.

This search tool allows you to view state tax actions and other revenue measures in one of three output formats with distinct groupings. Please start out by selecting which grouping option you would prefer. For your selection of categories, choose one or as many different categories as you would like. You can select up to three calendar years. For your selection of state(s), choose either a quick pick or a single group of states. To choose all of the tax categories or all of the states, please click on the "Select All" option. To change your search options, please click on "Clear All" before choosing new search categories. After selecting actions from the three output formats, you have the option to view actions by their outcome in the "Effect" box. This box gives you the option to view actions that increased revenue, decreased revenue, or both. If you are looking for measures with specific text, you can enter search terms in the "Search for Text of Tax Actions" box. After selecting all of your desired search options, select "Display Results" to get a list of the actions you are searching for.
