One in four U.S. households is asset poor.

Imagine trying to survive a financial crisis without any back-up savings or investments. One in four U.S. households is asset poor—they have insufficient financial assets to survive above the poverty line ($22,350 for a family of four in 2010) for more than three months. A 2008 Center for Social Development report noted that young adults especially have few assets; job loss, health problems or a divorce can leave many unable to make ends meet.
