Use of Credit Information for Insurance
For the last several years, insurance companies have been using credit information to determine a consumer's level of risk before selling or renewing auto, home or renter insurance policies. Legislators in 22 states and Puerto Rico are addressing legislation regarding the use of credit information in insurance in the 2013 legislative session. More
Broad Drop in State Unemployment
Unemployment declined in April in 40 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Rates rose in three states and remained steady in the remaining seven states. States with the highest job growth were Texas, New York and Florida. More

State Tax Study Commisions
Former Senator Russell Long of Louisiana had a succinct definition of tax reform: "Tax reform means 'don't tax you, don't tax me, tax that fellow behind the tree.'" While states tinker with their tax systems every year, most have tended to overlook the need for more fundamental tax reform to reflect structural economic change. Reform, according to University of Tennessee professor William Fox, "would seem to achieve more goals than just revenue chasing. Other goals might include better revenue elasticity, improved fairness, reduced efficiency costs, easier administration and compliance.". More
