Each year the Legislative Research Librarians (LRL) staff section of NCSL sponsors the Notable Documents Awards competition for state and legislative documents. The deadline for submissions for the 2014 awards is Monday, June 2.

The purposes of the Notable Documents Awards are to:

  • Formally recognize excellence in state or legislative documents that explore topics of contemporary interest to legislators and staff.
  • Present substantive material in an outstanding format.
  • Advertise the extensive range of information available to legislators and staff.
  • Promote the exchange of information with other states.

Any state or legislative document published in the last two years is eligible. Submissions are made through each state’s legislative librarian. Documents are evaluated on specific criteria, including relevance, organization, clarity, effective use of graphics, innovation, balance, and expansion of the base of knowledge on a particular subject.

Each document is reviewed by members of the Notable Documents Committee, which is comprised of legislative librarians. Elizabeth Lincoln, director of the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library, is the chair of this year’s committee.

Using a scorecard, committee members rate each document and develop a total score for each one. Winners are selected from the highest rated documents. Certificates and bragging rights are awarded to authors of the winning documents during the NCSL Legislative Summit.

Visit the Notable Documents Awards page for more details on criteria, forms for submissions, and a list of past winning documents.
