Connecticut’s legislature approved an increase to the state’s minimum wage this week. Governor Daniel P. Malloy signed the measure into law Thursday night, March 27. The new law provides a three-step increase that will bring the minimum wage in Connecticut to $10.10 in January 2017. Connecticut enacted an increase during the 2013 session, as well, but the 2014 law provides for more increases.

The law increases Connecticut's minimum wage from its current $8.70 to $9.15, effective Jan. 1, 2015. On Jan. 1, 2016, the minimum wage increases to $9.60, and to $10.10 on Jan. 1, 2017.

Delaware also enacted an increase this session, passing a bill which was signed into law on Jan. 30, 2014. The measure increases the state minimum wage to $7.75 effective June 1, 2014 and to $8.25 effective June 1, 2015.

The District of Columbia has also passed a bill this session to increase the District’s minimum wage and the measure was approved by Congress. The law provides for a three-step increase, to $9.50 effective July 1, 2014, then to $10.50 July 1, 2015 and to $11.50 on July 1, 2016. Starting July 1, 2017, the District’s minimum wage will be indexed to the increased cost of living, with annual adjustments each July.

As of Monday, March 24, 38 states and D.C. were considering minimum wage bills this session. In 34 of those states, the bills call for increases to the state minimum wage.

Washington currently has the highest state minimum wage, at $9.32 an hour. The state’s minimum wage is indexed to the cost of living, with annual adjustments each Jan. 1. Washington is one of 11 states that currently provide for annual indexed increases.
