Hawaii celebrated its 55th anniversary of statehood by inviting hundreds of former legislators to attend Wednesday’s opening session of the Legislature.

Former Hawaii Senator and Governor George Ariyoshi (Associated Press)Among the attendees were former Governor George Ariyoshi (pictured), who is 87, was a senator from 1959-1970, and became the nation’s first Asian-American governor in 1973. Former Representative William Bains-Jordan, 97, was also in the first session, serving from 1959-1962, and also attended the opening.

Each chamber in the legislature also produced a booklet containing the names of current and past legislators.
