A Colorado Senator resigned last week before a recall election prompted by her vote in favor of new gun-control laws. The resignation preserved the Democrats' one-vote majority.

"For Democrats in this swing state, the resignation of the senator, Evie Hudak, was a sign of the growing political cost of their votes last winter to expand background checks and limit the size of ammunition magazines — measures once hailed as breakthrough victories in the effort to respond to mass shootings." — The New York Times

Hudak will be replaced by a Democrat, who will have to defend the seat in the November 2014 election.
